Responding to the medical transport industry's need for increased research efforts, The Center's initial partners, MedFlight of Ohio and Omniflight, have provided start-up sponsorship and physical/virtual office space to create this independent 501(c) 3 corporation. The Center is also supported through the funding of grant initiatives – with recent funding from MedEvac Foundation International and the Air Medical Operators Association.

The Center collaborates with the State Network of Colorado Ambulatory Practices and Partners (SnoCAP) at the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Colorado Denver to develop web platforms and secure repositories for network data. The Center has affiliated with The Critical Care Transport Collaborative Outcomes Research Effort (CCT CORE) for ongoing clinical research collaboration. CCT Core is a multicenter outcomes research group with representation from several pre-eminent critical care transport programs throughout the United States. The Center anticipates that further partnerships will evolve as we continue to develop practice-based research networks across the country.

CENTER STAFF

Cathy L. Jaynes, RN, PhD - Director of Research for the Center.

Building on 25 years of experience as a clinician and leader in the critical care transport industry, Dr. Jaynes directs the Center for Medical Transport Research. Her clinical background includes emergency nursing at regional trauma centers in California and Ohio as well as air medical transport with MedFlight of Ohio. She completed her Baccalaureate of Science degree at California State University, Fresno. She has a Master of Science degree in Community Health Nursing and a PhD in Nursing (specializing in health systems evaluation and research methods) from The Ohio State University. She currently chairs the College of Nursing at University of Phoenix’s Denver campus. Her research focuses on the development of practice-based research networks to improve the provision of safe and effective critical care transport for rural underserved populations and to support the practitioners that provide this care. “It has been so rewarding to see the work of the Center grow as we pursue our mission to promote and conduct research on safety, clinical, operational and financial issues critical to medical transportation and its impact on patient care.” Dr. Jaynes is a member of Sigma Theta Tau, Nursing’s international honor society.

Howard A. Werman, MD - Medical Director

Dr. Werman is the Medical Director for the Center.  Dr. Werman is a Professor in the College of Medicine at The Ohio State University as well as the Medical Director for MedFlight.  His extensive experience as a board-certified emergency physician has expanded to directing and consulting national and international efforts to improve emergency medical systems.  He has published extensively in the area of emergency care and critical care transport.  Dr. Werman received the Barbara A. Hess Award from the Association for Air Medical Services in 2006 in recognition of his significant contributions to the enhancement of the emergency medical industry through research and educational excellence.

Pat Jones, Research Support Coordinator

Pat has been a member of The Center for Medical Transport Research team since its inception in 2008. Previously, she worked in an administrative capacity with MedFlight and for the Hilliard City Schools. Pat is the proud mother of three adult offspring who are now very successful professionals, and is married to a retired Columbus Police Officer. In addition to keeping The Center activities and meetings on track, she runs the family farm and has had extensive experience managing horses, sheep, goats, hogs, and chickens which makes her uniquely qualified to work in the crazy world of EMS.

Pat enjoys her role at The Center coordinating the operational details so that the office runs smoothly. The world of research is a new experience for her but a very interesting one. She has gained a new knowledge of all that is involved in the process of transporting the critically ill and injured patient.

She has realized the importance of safety in these transports and the dangers that the medical crews face each day in order to save the patient. She is honored to be a part of The Center and the impact on patient care our research will provide.
